What is a Physical Therapist and what credentials must they have?

The primary physical therapy practitioner is the Physical Therapist or PT.  They possess the training and license to examine, evaluate, diagnose and treat impairment, functional limitations and disabilities in patients or clients. Currently, most Physical Therapist education curricula in the United States culminate in a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree.  However, many practicing PT’s hold a Master of Physical Therapy degree, furthermore some even hold a Bachelor’s degree.

What can Physical Therapy do for you?

Physical therapy is a process which involves critical input of information from the patient, therapist, referring physician, and/or caregivers. In order to solve the puzzle, some or all of the parties involved will assess the movement potentials of the patient.  As a result, the Physical Therapist and patient will establish common goals. Based on a therapist’s neuromusculoskeletal expertise, an intervention strategy will be implemented to fit the patient’s specific needs.

Consequently, the deterioration in physical abilities and decrease in quality of life are a result of aging, injury, or disease. Physical Therapy can address most physical and neurological ailments by combining proven scientific data and conservative management. Furthermore, numerous studies support the benefits of therapy for pre- and post-operative conditions.
